Movies and Gaming at the ASLC

With COVID closing most entertainment options on and off-campus, it can be hard to find a fun and safe way to unwind after a stressful day of classes. For students who are struggling to make friends or just trying to find something fun to do, look no further than the Askew Student Life Center!

The ASLC is a student-run movie theater and gaming lounge located on-campus. They plan out several events throughout the month including gaming tournaments and karaoke nights! Due to COVID, all of their events and movie showings have been pushed to virtual, however, they are starting a drive-in movie series in October to promote social distancing. Even if you’re not going for an event or movie, you can check out the Grindhouse Cafe and try one of their specialty drinks while social distancing with your friends in the lounge. All events are free for students with an FSU ID, however, non-students can also join in on movie nights for only $6.

If you’re interested in gaming, you can join the ASLC Gaming Committee and plan fun tournaments and challenges. If you don’t want to join the committee, feel free to participate in Tabletop Tuesdays. Here, students sign up to join a Discord server and play multiplayer tabletop games with people around campus.

If you want to get more involved at the ASLC, there are many committees you can join to see what goes on behind the scenes. In the film committee and special events committee, you can pick the films, events, and speakers for the theater. If you are a more creative person, you can join the advertising and content committees. Advertisers get to polish their graphic design skills and create engaging campaigns with students. Meanwhile, content creators get to work on ASLC’s magazine and write for their blog. If you’re more interested in videos, join video production. These students get to film and edit the trailers that go on before the movie plays. The point is, there’s no shortage of things to do at the ASLC, so go get involved!

All of the information mentioned here, as well as ways to get involved, is listed on the ASLC website: https://union.fsu.edu/movies. Feel free to also follow the movie and gaming committee on theirs.
