Free Web Hosting For CCI Students

Hey Noles! If you are in the College of Communication or Information, chances are that you have had a class that requires some form of a live website. IT Professions, as an example, is a capstone course where you will build a personal interactive resume to share with employers. While you can use website builders like Wix (which I will admit I am guilty of), one of the easiest ways to impress employers is to display a self-coded website. Before you go out and pay for web hosting, you should know that CCI has its own web hosting platform for HTML/CSS sites, known as Torch! This blog post will serve as a brief tutorial on how to get started with Torch. As a prerequisite, you should already have the files that you would like the site to be based off. If you would like more info on how to get started with building an HTML/CSS site, check out the following video by our fellow CCI organization, Codeducation!

Once you have your website files ready, head to https://torch.cci.fsu.edu/index.html. Please keep in mind that when hosting a website through Torch, it is expected to be for academic purposes, and unauthorized uses could result in your access being revoked.

To start, download an SFTP program (The College recommends FileZilla, Cyberduck, or Transit).

Within the SFTP program of your choice, fill out the server’s name as torch.cci.fsu.edu, enter your FSU ID and password for the username and password fields, and set the port to 22. After uploading your web files to the public_html directory, you can visit https://torch/cci.fsu.edu/~FSUID, where you will replace FSUID with your unique ID (the same one as the username field in the setup process). Congrats – you should now be viewing the live version of your website!

Torch can also be used to host databases through MySQLWorkbench. For more information, please visit the following link: https://torch.cci.fsu.edu/access.html#mysql

I hope you have found these resources helpful – as a senior, I will admit I am just now finding out about Torch, so definitely share this blog post with your friends that are just transferring in! I hope finals week went well for all of you, and a huge shoutout to all our seniors who are graduating – GO NOLES!! On the flip side, I want to wish good luck to all of you who start summer classes in a few weeks. Thank you for reading!
